Hypoxylon shearii Y.-M. Ju & J. D. Rogers, A Revision of the Genus Hypoxylon, p. 182. 1996.

Stromata glomerate to pulvinate, with inconspicuous to conspicuous perithecial mounds, 0.8-3 mm diam x 0.8-1 mm thick; surface buff (45) when young, becoming fawn (87) or vinaceous buff (86) when mature; yellow or yellowish orange granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments luteous (12); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia spherical, 0.4-0.7 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface, usually encircled with a paler area ca. 0.2-0.3 (-0.4) mm diam.

Asci 110-134 mm total length x 8-10 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 80-95 (-105) mm long, the stipes 20-40 (-60) mm long, with apical ring highly reduced or lacking, not bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent.

Ascospores dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, strongly curved, with narrowly to broadly rounded ends, 12-14 x 5.5-6.5 (-7) mm, with straight germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, with very conspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
