TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon trugodes Berk. & Broome, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 14: 122. 1873.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, sometimes with slightly sunken area around ostioles, 0.7-1.4 mm thick; surface chestnut (40), sepia (63), brown vinaceous (84), dark vinaceous (82), dark livid (80), or purple slate (102); ochraceous or brownish yellow granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments pure yellow (14) or amber (47); the tissue below the perithecial layer inconspicuous.

Perithecia obovoid, tubular, to long tubular, 0.2-0.4 mm diam x 0.3-1.2 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 110-200 mm total length x 6-7.2 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 61-73 mm long, the stipes 48-126 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.3-0.8 mm high x 1.5-2 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 8-11 x 3.5-4.5 mm, with slightly sigmoid germ slit spore-length; perispore dehiscent in 10% KOH, smooth or with inconspicuous coil-like ornamentation; epispore smooth.
