TELEOMORPH

Hypoxylon rugulosporum Van der Gucht, Y.-M. Ju, & J. D. Rogers, Mycologia 89: 506. 1997.

Stromata effused-pulvinate, with inconspicuous perithecial mounds, 1.4-2.3 cm long x 0.7-1 cm broad x 1.5-2 mm thick; surface chestnut (40); dull brown granules immediately beneath surface and between perithecia, with KOH-extractable pigments dark livid (80); tissue below the perithecial layer blackish, 0.3-0.4 mm thick.

Perithecia tubular, 0.3-0.5 mm diam x 1-1.5 mm high.

Ostioles lower than the stromatal surface.

Asci 125-190 mm total length x 9-10 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 70-82 mm long, with stipes 55-110 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 1 mm high x 2.5-3 mm broad.

Ascospores brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, 12-16 x 5-7.5 mm, with sigmoid germ slit spore-length; perispore indehiscent in 10% KOH; epispore wrinkled.
