Stromata with convex, obconical fertile parts 0.8-4 mm diam, containing several perithecia, usually fused into crust up to 10 cm diam, tapering downwards into radiating, branched, strap-like stipes; surface dull blackish brown, smooth; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface; tissue between and beneath perithecia coriaceous to woody, white to gray, becoming dark brown and disintegrating.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.8-1.2 mm diam x 1-1.5 mm high.

Ostioles conical to conic-papillate.

Asci 170-210 mm total length x 10-14 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 145-170 mm long, the stipes 25-60 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, urn-shaped, 6-7 mm high x 4.5 mm broad.

Ascospores dark brown to blackish brown, unicellular, ellipsoid-inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, smooth, (25-)26-33 x 8.5-11(-12) mm, with straight germ slit slightly less than spore-length.
