Stromata with convex or flattened, turbinate or obconical fertile parts 2-5(-7) mm diam, containing several perithecia, usually fused into small crust, tapering downwards into radiating, cylindrical stipes or infrequently sessile; surface dull copper brown, dull reddish brown to dull blackish brown, smooth or sporadically covered with remnants of papyraceous outermost layer; carbonaceous immediately beneath surface; tissue between and beneath perithecia coriaceous to woody, white to gray, becoming dark brown and disintegrating.

Perithecia obovoid, 0.5-1 mm diam x 1-1.5 mm high.

Ostioles finely papillate.

Asci 270-310 mm total length x 9-12 mm broad, the spore-bearing parts 210-230 mm long, the stipes 50-80 mm long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, urn-shaped, 5-7 mm high x 3.5-4.5 mm broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid or fusoid, inequilateral, with narrowly rounded ends, smooth, (26-)27-36(-40) x 7-10(-12) mm, with straight germ slit much less than spore-length.
