NOTES

Shear (1928, 1945) and Miller (1930, 1961) apparently considered Hypoxylon atropurpureum an effused form of Hypoxylon multiforme (Fr. : Fr.) Fr. Pouzar (1985a) recognized the differences between H. atropurpureum and H. multiforme, and transferred the former to Nemania. Granmo et al. (1999) designated the K specimen of Fries' exsiccatum--Scleromyc. Sueciae no. 75--that bears "M. 874" as the lectotype of Sphaeria atropurpurea.
