NOTES

Berkeley (1876) described N. beaumontii as having uniseptate ascospores which led Saccardo (1882) to combine it with Valsaria Ces. & De Not. This was followed by Miller (1961) who accordingly excluded this fungus from Hypoxylon. The types at K and FH show that N. beaumontii is a typical xylariaceous fungus with unicellular ascospores and ascal apical rings that stain blue with iodine. The syntypes at K are glued on a paper card. The upper two pieces were marked with pencil as no. 4617 and this material is here designated as the lectotype. The lower piece was marked as no. 4857 and is scanty and bears only two perithecia; however, the duplicate of this number at FH contains ample material. Rosellinia leprantha is a herbarium name based on Brazilian material; it was considered by Miller (1961) to be Hypoxylon truncatum (Schwein. : Fr.) J. H. Miller. Nemania ravenelii is similar but has larger ascospores.
