º Hypoxylon ravenelii Rehm, Hedwigia 21: 137 (1882)[non Sacc. (1882)].
Stromata pulvinate, superficial, containing one to a number of perithecia, 0.7-4 mm long, 0.7-2 mm broad, 0.7 mm thick; surface blackish brown, with conspicuous perithecial mounds; carbonaceous tissue immediately beneath surface and between perithecia; tissue beneath the perithecial layer inconspicuous.
Perithecia spherical, 0.4-0.5 mm diam.
Ostioles higher than the stromatal surface, with openings conic-papillate.
Asci not found.
Ascospores light brown to brown, unicellular, ellipsoidal-inequilateral, with broadly rounded ends, 11-14 x 5.5-6.5 µm, with straight, inconspicuous germ slit 1/2 to 1/3 spore-length on the ventral side.
