Stromata applanate or effused-pulvinate, solitary or confluent, 0.3-3 cm long x 0.3-1.5 cm broad x 0.3-0.4 mm thick; outer dehiscing layer dark brown, thin; mature surface dull gray, becoming black, sometimes cracked in the manner of Diatrype stigma; carbonaceous tissue immediately beneath surface, forming a crust; tissue between perithecia and beneath the perithecial layer mainly composed of host tissue.

Perithecia up to 0.1-0.3 mm diam.

Ostioles lower than stromatal surface, with ostiolar openings appearing punctate, sometimes surrounded by slightly raised rim.

Asci 95-110 m total length x 4.5-6 m broad, the spore-bearing part 70-90 m long, the stipe 20-30 m long, with apical ring bluing in Melzer's iodine reagent, discoid, 0.5 m high x 2 m broad.

Ascospores brown to dark brown, unicellular, ellipsoid, nearly equilateral, with narrowly to broadly rounded ends, smooth, 8.5-12 x 4-5 m, with straight germ slit spore-length.
